way up north – part 2 [my.life]
Part 2 of our Alaskan adventures started with an awesome 6 hour drive to Fairbanks. And what a drive it was…large, purple, snow-capped mountains lining both sides of the road, covered in different shades of green trees. The trees were more dense then any other place I’ve been to, so thick I felt like I could walk across the top of them. The ground foliage was pretty amazing too and was just starting to turn orange and red for winter. I am a huge sucker for vibrant, rich color and so I was pretty much in heaven. Plus…every so often we came across little lakes which created the totally awesome reflections of the mountains. AWWW! Happy moment!
Did I mention I fell in love with Alaskan clouds?!
Next…let me tell you about a dream come true! Yes, they do happen outside of Disneyland! I have always wanted to see the northern lights..but wasn’t sure it would happen because we were rather early in the “lights season”. We had decided we would at least try and see the lights while in Fairbanks and so about 10 p.m. we jumped in the car, stopped at Fred Meyers for some treats (vanilla ice cream, root beer and some Alaskan brewed beer). I had been unable to locate a specific “viewing spot” so I headed toward this hill I saw which was away from the city and found a nice dark place to pull off on the highway. We cranked up the heater and began to enjoy our root beer floats and in less than 15 minutes…much to our excitement and surprise Liz exclaimed…there they are. Thanks to my bag-o-pod I was able to get some fun long exposures while enjoying the wispy lights. And let me just say THEY WERE TOTALLY AMAZING!
This verse comes to mind almost every time I look at the night sky. “The heavens declare the glory of God and their expanse is declaring the work of His hand. Day to day pours forth speech and night to night reveals knowledge.” – Psalm 19:1-2 God is so creative and I am very thankful I got the opportunity to enjoy some of His amazing masterpiece. It seems the more I travel and see of the world, the more I am convinced of the sovereignty, majesty and total awesomeness of God. These amazing designs in nature are the work of an excellent designer!
This grove of birch trees was super fun…as well as the field of vibrant flowers we found! SO much COLOR! It made five California girls super happy!!
The innovative way to boil water for dinner when the stupid cabin only puts electricity near the ceiling!
Frost at 10:30 a.m….along with frozen toilets and faucets! Yes, we only stayed at the best places!
I always feel the state I visit should understand why the driving may be a bit “rushed”!
And of course…tired airport feet!
10 Random things I learned while in Alaska!
1) Resort – The Alaskan’s idea of a “great” campground/rv park and it probably means it should be your last resort.
2) There are few things better than a tube of ice cream and 5 old girlfriends catching up
3) Verizon has pretty much awesome service everywhere #skypedatesstillhappened
4) Alaska is huge and we are really, really small!
5) Bathrooms are overrated #findatree
6) Good sleep is very important to happiness
7) No one in Alaska dresses up, wear jeans and a sweater and you’ll be considered one super hot chick!
8) Alaska has frontier coffee #notyetperfected
9) Apparently camo weddings are a big thing
10) You can time travel to 1990!
So….I would encourage you to…GO SEE THE WORLD, even if it’s just where you live! Get outside, enjoy His handiwork, thank Him for His grand design! Live in it, Enjoy it, Love it! And..remember to find beauty is in the little things, not just the huge grand things. Both spiders and mountains are evidence of our AWESOME creator. The thing that makes God so great is the fact that He is all-powerful, mighty and sovereign…yet He remembers us small human beings, loves us and cares for us! Definitely something to #begrateful for…hope you enjoyed! ~ Amanda
